EU Proposes Expanded Sanctions Targeting Russia’s Financial, Energy Sectors
According to reports, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the measures are designed to further restrict Moscow’s ability to fund its ongoing war in Ukraine, emphasizing a gradual erosion of its economic base.
"Brick by brick, we are collapsing the foundations of Russia's war economy," Kallas said in a post on US social media platform X while unveiling the proposal.
The package reportedly includes a temporary suspension of adjustments to the Russian oil price cap mechanism, along with additional listings of entities allegedly used to generate revenue and bypass existing sanctions.
Speaking in Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the initiative would extend restrictions across multiple sectors, including energy, financial services, cryptocurrency, and fisheries, and would also introduce a ban on entry for former Russian combatants into EU territory.
"Our sanctions keep biting hard and cutting deep. They are weakening the economic foundations of Russia's war effort," von der Leyen said, adding that Russia’s economy is slowing and its fiscal position is facing increasing strain.
According to reports, EU officials argue that the cumulative impact of sanctions continues to undermine Russia’s economic resilience and limit its capacity to sustain military operations.
